Welcome to the Aloha State! We have selected Macadamia Nut Ice Cream for our Hawaii State Dessert. Hawaii was the first state to produce the nut commercially on a large scale. For many years, Hawaii was the largest producer, but now the title goes to South Africa. The Macadamia tree is indigenous to Australia and is fairly difficult to grow. It takes 7-10 years for a tree to produce nuts, a fact which contributes to their high cost.

Macadamia Nut Ice Cream

Ingredients
3/4 c honey-roasted macadamia nuts
2 T unsalted butter
1/2 t salt
1 t vanilla
1/2 c sugar
1 1/2 c milk
1 1/2 c heavy cream

Coarsely chop the macadamia nuts. Melt butter in medium saucepan. Add nuts and sauté for 3 minutes. Add milk and sugar and cook over low heat for 3-4 minutes, just until sugar dissolves.
Remove from heat and add salt, vanilla and heavy cream.
Chill mixture in the refrigerator 3-4 hours until it is quite cold. Freeze in an ice-cream maker following manufacturer’s directions. After removing from ice-cream maker, place in freezer until firm, at least 2 hours.
